Samsung has released details of what to expect when the Galaxy S2 is updated to Android 4.1.2, as owners of unlocked versions of the ageing handset look forward to what promises to be a very welcome platform bump.

In an official missive courtesy of Samsung S. Korea, which was brought to Western eyes by Sam Mobile, the phone-maker confirmed that improvements the Jelly Bean version of Android will bring to the two-year-old smartie include enhanced home screens and smoother scrolling.

Also incoming are a suite of new apps, including Google+, Google+ Talk and Google Play Movies, Samsung announced, as well as the intelligent sleep mode dubbed Smart Stay that debuted on the S3 and camera functions such as pause while recording.

The upgrade, a due date for which remains firmly under wraps and was previously expected late last year will only be available via Kies rather than as over-the-air update.

It’s not yet clear whether the OS revamp will make it to network-branded UK editions of the S2. But if it does, expect the usual delay while your carrier ensures the software works with its proprietary services – a process that could add months to your wait.
