Both are very different handsets. Samsung ATIV S vs Nokia Lumia 900 specs & features showdown makes a very interesting reading

Samsung’s ATIV S Windows Phone 8 handset is around the corner. Some markets have reportedly started to get the handset. T-Mobile Australia has recently updated that the ATIV S would immediately be available for grabs in the country. Anyway, it is too late for the device to roll out as it was announced several months back. Whatever it is, the phone is as said to raise stiff challenge to the lines of Lumia 920 and HTC 8X.

But, here we compare ATIV S with the old Lumia 900. The handset, which came up last year, is Nokia’s first flagship Lumia handset and it runs on Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. But, it is going to get a fresh firmware update early next year. The Lumia 900 will get Windows Phone 7.8 update, which will make it a fresh phone with many WP 9 attributes. By then, let us hope that the ATIV S will be up in many markets. Here is our comparison of the ATIV S and the Lumia 900.

Display: The ATIV S comes up with a larger 4.8-inch screen. Samsung has used its much-admired Super AMOLED display panel with the handset. It offers a nice screen resolution of 720 x 1280 at 306 pixel density. It is when the Lumia 900 is there with a 4.3-inch display, which packs only a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels at 217-ppi.

Processor, Memory: The ATIV S is powered by rich specs. It is up with a 1.5GHz dual core Krait CPU with Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 chipset. Well, 1GB of RAM, Adreno 225 GPU and 16GB of internal memory give further muscle to the handset.

The Lumia 900, at the same time, is equipped with a 1.4GHz single core CPU with Qualcomm Snapdragon S2 APQ8055 inside. See, Windows Phone 7.5 Mango doesn’t support multi core processors. It has 512MB of RAM and Adreno 205 graphical processor. Of course, there is a significant change in the processor capacity of the devices.

Camera: Similar to the Galaxy S III, the ATIV S sports an 8MP rear camera with all cutting edge features. It touts LED flash, autofocus, geo-tagging and much more. Plus, you can use the camera to capture video at a high quality of 1080p @ 30fps. The front camera has the same 1.9MP sensor that will help you make quality video chats with friends.

The Lumia 900 also mounts an 8MP rear camera. But, special features like F2.2 aperture, dual LED and 28mm focal length make it far advanced than the camera of ATIV S. The phone also shows off features like autofocus, geo tagging, touch focus and more. It can capture 720p HD video and you have a 1.3MP front camera for video chatting on Lumia 900.

Firmware: The ATIV S is designed for Windows Phone 8. It is the most recent update to the Microsoft’s mobile operating system. With WP 8, Microsoft is working hard to find and establish a palace in the mobile market. The Lumia 900 runs Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, the former flagship update to the firmware.

But, when Microsoft launches Windows phone 7.8 update, the 900 will get it. The handset is not compatible to the new WP 8. And so, Microsoft is about to release a special update to Mango with the Metro style UI and a set of other traits of Windows 8 for Lumia 900 and other legacy devices.

Price, Availability: The former Lumia flagship phone arrived in stores last year. Its unlocked version is priced higher. It was initially priced around $700. However, many carriers offer the device for hugely discounted prices either on data plans or monthly fees. The ATIV S is still to come to the front. The device is said to get priced around $400. And of course, carriers will sell the device for reduced prices on contracts
